Little Black Handbag

Little Black Handbag

This pattern is for a small clutch-type handbag. Its idea was derived of both necessity and general lack of funds. I needed a clutch for the Seabee Ball tomorrow night, and I just couldnt afford a nice one. I used the last of my Debbie Bliss Cathay from the Shrug I just finished, so it makes a really soft, durable finished bag.  NO USING THIS PATTERN AS YOUR OWN OR USING OTHERWISE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!! This pattern is also on Ravelry, so if you are a Raveler, check that out!!!

Materials:
1 skein Debbie Bliss Cathay (I used Black, obviously)
Size 4 straight needles
A Tapestry needle
1 Button
Size G Crochet Needle
Back:
Cast on 40 stitches
Knit 30 rows stockinette st
Next Row: ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog
Next Row: ssp, p to last 2 sts, p2tog
Repeat last 2 rows until 1 st is left.
Cut yarn, leaving an extra long (20″ or more) tail, and Bind Off.
Using the crochet needle, chain 7 stitches on the long tail. Insert crochet needle into the first chain and bind off. This will serve as your button hole.
Front:
Cast on 40 stitches
Knit 30 rows stockinette st
Bind Off.
Finishing:
With the front and back pieces’ RS’s facing, sew the cast on edges together, and sew up the side seams.
Sew the button to the correct spot onto the front piece.
***After having used this bag for the first time, I am now suggesting that you would knit this bag double stranded to increase the bags strength! Granted, the bag worked very well and held all of my neccessities, but a little more strength in the bag would have been wonderful!***
